| Note by a reader: "It was generally regarded that the Fubuki type destroyers were a revolution in destroyer design and construction. There were 24 vessels of the Fubuki type made of the model I, model Kai I, model II, and model III variants. The info that I am about to give is regarding the model III. The model III was the last in the line of the Fubuki type destroyers. This model retained the doughnut-shaped suction pipe and type B gun turrets that could be used for both antiship or antiaircraft roles of the model II, but also incorporated several improvements. The most noticeable improvement was in the main boilers. While the model I, model Kai I, and model II had four main boilers, the model III only had three. The model III also had air preheaters that were employed by the Sazanami which successfully reduced fuel consumption and boiler weight. Boiler weight reductions of about 23% and a 10-15% decrease in fuel consumption were achieved over the earlier models. One main boiler was connected to a thinner first funnel and two boilers were attached to the larger second funnel. This is the most readily distinguishable feature between the model III and its predecessors. The model III on its compass bridge had a torpedo launching control room, equipped with a central controlling device for torpedo launching, a gun-fire control room, a type 94 model 3 antiaircraft gun and a range finding tower. The bridge was four stories high. The range finder was enlarged from 2 meters to 3 meters. Its three triple torpedo tubes (the same mounted on earlier versions) were protected with shields at the time of completion. the model III had two 13 mm antiaircraft guns, the same as the model II, however they were moved from the front to the back of the second funnel. Gun turrets were replaced by type C variants with a mximum elevation of 55 degrees." |
